Type Media Center
High-impact independent journalism and literary nonfiction
Type Media Center is a nonprofit media organization that sponsors fellows, hosts forums, publishes books, funds investigative reporting, and awards several annual journalism prizes. Its mission is to produce high-impact journalism and literary nonfiction that tackles injustice and inequality, drives change, supports social movements, and transforms and diversifies the fields of journalism and publishing.
Brand Identity
Type Media Center, formerly known as The Nation Institute and associated with The Nation magazine, wanted to rebrand after becoming an independent entity. The new name, Type Media Center, was selected to reflect this shift. The rebranding needed to be applied across all of their programs with the goal of preserving the individuality of each sub-brand while unifying them under one umbrella.
Visual Design
We developed a design system using typography, UI components and color palettes to unite all of Type Media’s family of sub-brands. The website features a global navigation bar that seamlessly connects each program. Each sub-brand is identified by its own unique accent color.
Visual Design
Type Media Center’s book publishing division, formerly known as Nation Books, was rebranded as Bold Type Books. We updated the typeface to a modern slab serif that subtly references typewriter fonts, and simplified the graphic for a cleaner, more streamlined look. It was an honor to refine the typewriter graphic originally designed by Milton Glaser. Additionally, we added a tagline to emphasize Bold Type Books’ commitment to amplifying the voices of writers who challenge power through journalistic nonfiction.
Visual Design
Type Media Center's investigative newsroom, formerly The Investigative Fund, was renamed as Type Investigations. We rebranded the program by retaining the signature red and flame icon we previously designed for The Investigative Fund and integrated them with the fonts and layout style of the new Type parent brand.
